So what is Cognation anyway?
South Wales is the ultimate destination to come and ride; the Cognation trail centres offer a diverse range of trails that will appeal to all levels of ability; from beginners to pro’s!
Cognation is a collection of unique, World class mountain biking venues in South Wales, together making South Wales one of the best places in the World to visit for mountain biking. The Cognation umbrella includes BikePark Wales at GethinWoodland Park, Afan Forest Park, Cwmcarn, and BrechfaForest.
Through Cognation match funding has been made available to build the flagship BikePark Wales project and to add new trails and facilities to the other existing centres. Together, the centres under the Cognation brand make South Wales a worthy destination for many happy days of mountain biking.
A fantastic £4.35m has been made available for these projects across Neath Port Talbot, Merthyr and Caerphilly. This total includes funding from the local authorities, Western Valley and Heads of the Valley Strategic Regeneration Area Fund, European Regional Development Fund and the investment from BikePark Wales.
Bike Park Wales – no need for us to say much about this, all the info can be found right here on this site.
Afan Forest Park is home to Skyline, W2, White’s Level, Y Wal and the Rookie. Also, Afan Bike Park located at Bryn Bettws Lodge, Gyfylchi is the ultimate playground for riders to improve their skill on numerous runs, berms and jumps. There are three main hubs in the valley - Afan Forest Park Visitor Centre, Glyncorrwg Mountain Bike Centre and Bryn Bettws Lodge. Afan offers the best XC routes in the country and appeals to all levels of rider (and for summer 2013 an old time favourite the Penhydd will be opening).
Cwmcarn is mainly for downhill junkies boasting two main downhill trails; Y Mynydd red and black (including an uplift service). It also has a cheeky XC trail the Twrch - a favourite amongst local riders. Towards the end of 2013 Cwmcarn will open a new downhill trail and a new XC trail….keep your eyes peeled! Cwmcarn Visitors Centre has a great café and facilities.
Brechfa is a unique trail centre that is home to the Gorlech and Raven trail, and for beginners there’s the Derwen Green and Derwen Blue.
